Home Repair Scopebook · Services
This hub covers the four scopes most homeowners send to a handyman: grouped general repairs, drywall patching and painting, small plumbing and electrical fixes within local rules, and furniture assembly or wall mounting. Each page gives published 2025–2026 prices, the failure points to watch, and what to include in a request so a matched professional can give a free written estimate.
The word handyman covers everything from re-hanging a door to installing a garbage disposal, and the price and the legal permission vary by task. IBISWorld counts 528,883 handyman businesses in the U.S. in 2026, nearly all small operators, and each one draws the line between what they will and will not do a little differently. The four service pages below sort tasks into scopes so you can describe your list in terms a pro recognizes.
If you only have one item, start with the page that matches it. If you have a list that crosses categories, which is most people, start with general home repairs and use the other pages to understand the items that need special handling. The calculator prices any of them by the hour.
Service guideGeneral Home RepairsGeneral home repairs are the grouped small tasks that keep a house working: sticking doors, loose handrails, failed caulk, cracked trim, wobbly fixtures, weatherstripping, and minor carpentry.
Service guidePainting & DrywallPainting and drywall work through a handyman covers holes, cracks, water-stained sections, corner bead damage, texture matching, and repainting a wall or room once the cause of the damage is handled.
Service guidePlumbing & ElectricalThis scope covers minor plumbing and electrical symptoms a homeowner notices first: a dripping faucet, a running toilet, a slow drain, a dead outlet, a wobbling ceiling fan, a light fixture swap.
Service guideFurniture Assembly & MountingAssembly and mounting covers flat-pack furniture, TV and monitor mounts, floating shelves, mirrors, curtain hardware, and anti-tip anchoring for dressers and bookcases.
| Service | Best for | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| General Home Repairs | A prioritized list of clearly described small tasks across several rooms: doors, trim, caulk, hardware, weatherstripping, minor carpentry. | The list is dominated by one large job (a full room paint, a new circuit) that deserves its own specialist quote. |
| Painting & Drywall | Defined patches, texture matching, and painting of a wall, ceiling, or room where the cause of any damage is already known. | Stains or cracks keep returning; find the moisture or movement source first, or you will pay for the same patch twice. |
| Plumbing & Electrical | Like-for-like fixture swaps, running toilets, dripping faucets, and switch or outlet replacements where local rules allow a handyman to do them. | The work adds circuits, touches gas, moves drains, or needs a permit; that is licensed-trade work in every state. |
| Furniture Assembly & Mounting | Flat-pack furniture, TV and shelf mounting, and anti-tip anchoring where you know the product model and the wall type. | The item exceeds the wall's capacity (a very heavy TV on a hollow wall) and needs blocking added first; that is small carpentry plus patching. |
By the numbers
528,883
handyman service businesses in the U.S., 2026
Nearly all are small operators, many one person. With that many businesses and no shared standard, verifying insurance and reading estimates critically falls to the homeowner.
IBISWorld, Handyman Services in the US Number of Businesses (2026)$125–$800
Fixr repair bands: wall hole $125–$175, drywall repair $275–$800
Fixr also lists door, window, or fence repair at $125 to $200 and tile and grout at $200 to $400. These are standalone prices; inside a bundled visit the per-item cost falls.
Fixr, How much does it cost to hire a handyman? (2025)$612
average drywall repair cost, with a $296–$929 typical range
HomeAdvisor prices small fixes at $20 to $120, ceilings at $220 to $1,300 and water-damaged sections at $600 to $1,550 because wet material has to come out and the cavity has to dry before anything goes back.
HomeAdvisor, How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost? (2026)4%
projected growth in maintenance and repair employment, 2025–2035
BLS projects about 148,700 openings a year in the occupation. Demand is steady, so good pros stay booked one to three weeks out for non-urgent lists, longer in spring.
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, General Maintenance and Repair Workers (2025)General repairs are the cheapest per item and the easiest to bundle: Fixr's repair table spans $125–$800, with wall hole repair at $125 to $175 and door, window, or fence repair at $125 to $200. Drywall and painting cost more because finish quality is visible and prep dominates the time; HomeAdvisor's drywall repair average is $612 with water-damaged sections running $600 to $1,550. Plumbing and electrical carry the highest regulatory risk, since the same faucet swap that is handyman work in one state may require a license in another.
Assembly and mounting are the most product-dependent. HomeGuide prices furniture assembly at $50–$550 depending on piece size, and TV mounting labor at $150–$400 depending on the wall. The price is set less by the pro's rate than by the manufacturer's instructions and the framing behind the drywall.
Use the symptom, not the room. A stain on the ceiling is a plumbing question first and a drywall question second; patching it before the leak is found wastes money twice. A door that will not latch is a general repair unless the frame has shifted, which points to something structural. A ceiling fan that hums is electrical if the problem is the switch or wiring and general if the blades are unbalanced. The guide table in this section gives the fast rule for each scope.
When in doubt, describe the symptom in the request form and let the matched pro sort it. Today's Homeowner found 82% of homeowners say at least one area of the home needs repair, and many of those items sit because nobody knows who to call. Sending the symptom is faster than solving that yourself.

The same three things every time: parts on hand, access cleared, and a written priority order. A pro who arrives to find the new faucet still in the store, the closet blocked, and no idea which of nine tasks matters most will spend the first billable hour sorting that out. Angi's material markup of 10–30% and HomeGuide's trip fees both exist because those situations are common.
Photos matter more than descriptions. A photo of the failing hinge, the crack, or the mounting wall lets the pro bring the right anchors and price the task fixed rather than hourly. Model numbers matter for assembly and fixtures. Measurements matter for shelving and mounting. Put them all in the request and the estimate gets more precise. The tools page has a checklist you can print.
When the job is regulated, structural, or bigger than a day. New circuits, gas lines, drain relocation, roof work beyond a shingle or two, anything needing a permit, and anything touching a load-bearing wall need a licensed trade or a general contractor. Fixr lists drywall repair up to $800 through a handyman, but a whole-room rebuild at $48 to $80 per sheet installed is drywall-contractor territory. The comparison pages draw those lines job by job.
The other wrong call is repeated cosmetic repair of a recurring problem. A crack that comes back each spring, a stain that reappears after painting, or a door that sticks every humid season is telling you something about moisture or movement. Paying a handyman to cover it again is cheaper than diagnosis this year and more expensive over five.
Demand is steady and rising. BLS projects 4% growth in general maintenance and repair employment through 2035 with about 148,700 openings a year, and Houzz's 2026 study found 47% of surveyed homeowners repaired something in 2025, while 50% plan a renovation in 2026. Good pros in most metros book one to three weeks out for non-urgent lists, longer in spring. Emergency and after-hours calls cost more; Fixr reports $90 to $200 an hour for those.
The practical answer is to keep a running list and book a bundled visit every few months rather than calling for each item as it fails. That converts most repairs from urgent to scheduled, which is the cheapest category. The polls page shows how often other homeowners actually do this.

Scale and licensing. A general contractor manages projects above the state's licensing threshold, pulls permits, and coordinates trades. A handyman performs small, unpermitted tasks directly, typically below a dollar limit that varies by state. Fixr's national average handyman project is $300; a contractor's minimum engagement is often several thousand. For a punch list of small items, the handyman is the right and cheaper call.
Usually, as long as the plumbing and electrical items are within what local rules permit a handyman to do. Most pros are comfortable patching a wall, swapping a faucet cartridge, hanging a TV, and adjusting a door in the same afternoon. Tell them the full list up front so they bring the right parts and tools, and label anything you suspect needs a licensed trade so they can confirm or decline it in the written estimate.
Most do: fence and gate repair, deck board replacement, gutter cleaning and reattachment, exterior caulking, mailbox posts, and small pressure-washing jobs. Fixr's price bands put fence repair at $125 to $200. Roofing beyond a single shingle, structural deck repair, and anything at height that needs staging generally goes to a specialist. Weather matters for scheduling; exterior caulk and paint need dry days above roughly 50°F.
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and check that the name matches the business. Many small operators carry general liability but not workers' compensation, which matters if they bring a helper. IBISWorld counts over half a million handyman businesses, most sole proprietors, so verification falls on you. An uninsured pro who falls off your ladder is your homeowner's insurance claim.
Hand tools, drills, a ladder, fasteners, anchors, caulk, patch compound, sandpaper, and common consumables. What they will not carry is anything product-specific: your faucet, your fixture, your paint color, your furniture. Confirm in advance whether a specialty tool (a tile saw, a texture sprayer) is needed for your list and whether there is a charge for it.
Not if it rides along with other tasks. A single smoke-detector battery is not worth a $130 minimum, but added to a bundled visit it costs a few minutes. The mistake is calling for the small item alone. Keep a list, and when it hits four or five items or one urgent one, book the visit and clear the whole list at once.
Defer to the more cautious view when licensing is involved. A pro who declines an electrical item because local rules require an electrician is following the law, not padding the job. If the disagreement is about difficulty or price rather than permission, ask for the task to be quoted separately so you can compare with a specialist. The reviews page has a checklist for reading how other homeowners describe these judgment calls.
